Leeds launches on-the-go recycling campaign

Residents are encouraged not to contaminate their plastic bottles

A new campaign to improve recycling on-the-go has been launched in Leeds by environmental charity Hubbub and compliance scheme Ecosurety.

Bringing together big businesses and small firms, #LeedsByExample will pilot new recycling facilities for plastic, cans and paper cups on the streets, in local offices, shopping centres, universities and transport hubs for six months.

Bubble-blowing bins, recycling rewards, ‘re-cycler’ recycling collection bikes and an art installation will appear across the city centre.

Results of the trial will be shared openly with the goal of a national roll-out of the most successful elements.

The UK uses 13bn plastic bottles, 9bn cans and 2.5bn coffee cups per year yet only 42% of local authorities provide on-the-go facilities, according to ReCoup.

It will also trial the We-Recycle app for the first time, which uses barcodes and labelling on soft drinks packaging and coffee cups to provide clear help for people on what, how and where to recycle.

The campaign is backed by brands including Asda, Caffe Nero, Coca-Cola GB and McDonald’s.

Contamination issues will be addressed with a playful and eye-catch communication campaign including adverts, street signs and messages such as ‘empty plastic cans, nowt else’.

Gavin Ellis, director and co-founder of Hubbub, said: “The huge range of eye-catching recycling bins and communications throughout Leeds city centre will make it really easy for residents, workers and visitors to spot their nearest recycling point.

“We’re interested to discover which of these will make the biggest difference and will share what we learn openly so that the most successful elements can be rolled out in Leeds and nationally.

All recycling collected will be processed in the UK as locally as possible.
