Microbeads ban takes effect

A ban on the manufacture of products containing microbeads in UK has come into force today.

Manufacturers will no longer be able to add small pieces of plastic to rinse-off products such as face scrubs, toothpastes and shower gels.

Praised by campaigners including Greenpeace, the ban will help stop billions of microbeads from polluting the ocean and causing harm to marine life.

Environment minister Thérèse Coffey said: “Microbeads are entirely unnecessary when there are so many natural alternatives available. Now we have reached this important milestone, we will explore how we can build on our world-leading ban and tackle other forms of plastic waste.”

However, a ban on the sale of products containing microbeads will not come in until later on in the year.
