Tesco customers will be able to buy small, snack-size avocados in an attempt by the supermarket chain to tackle food waste.

Available in packs of six, the rare mini avocados named Zilla Eggs, will be sold in recyclable egg style boxes.

They are about a third of the size of regular avocados and will be available in Tesco stores for a limited time only.

James Cantoni, Tesco avocado buyer, said: "These Zilla Eggs are a brilliant way to offer customers great tasting, high quality avocados, which previously would have been rejected by growers because of their size.

"They are perfect for customers who want to snack without the usual fuss or worry of wasting the other half of the avocado."

Demand for avocados soared by more than 30% last year.

At last the supermarkets are seeing sense - why does it take them so long to act on what is obvious to the general public?
It has to be a win-win, situation, less waste for the producer, Tesco still make profit from the sales of these smaller fruit and the consumer gets more choice.
