Viridor has launched what it says is the industry’s first hard hat recycling scheme.

The Taunton based waste management company teamed up with Devon plastic recycling specialists Polymer Industries to create a solution for the complex plastic waste stream.

A trial was successfully rolled out with Babcock International Group which resulted in 1,200 hard hats recycled, with more anticipated as the trial progresses.

Hard hats have a life span of just two to five years.

Ian Poyser, account manager at Viridor, said: “Hard hats aren’t accepted for commercial recycling due to their complex plastic composition but we know our customers want us to identify a circular economy solution.

“This new service…is just one of the many ways we are working to target specific plastic items this year.”

The scheme is currently available in the South West with potential for further expansion.
