Launch of #SavedFromTheSea Competition

A new competition offering four prizes is challenging beach-goers to do a quick shoreline litter pick this summer before taking a creative photo of what they find.

Led by environmental consultancy Eunomia in partnership with outdoor brand Fjällräven #SavedFromTheSea invites holiday-makers to spend five minutes doing a beach clean before taking a photo of either the most unusual item found, or coming up with a creative way to reuse something in their collection.

There are four Fjällräven Re-Kånken rucksacks up for grabs to those with the best entries. These colourful bags are made entirely from polyester recycled from plastic bottles.

Hosted on Twitter and running from 30 June running until 31 August, #SavedFromTheSea is open to all ages across the world and aims to raise awareness of the marine plastic problem, one of the consultancy’s areas of expertise.

Holidaymakers wishing to enter should send a photo of the most unusual item found during their mini beach clean, or even better; something they think they can reuse, and an explanation of how they intend on reusing it, in a tweet to @Eunomia_RandC with the hashtag #SavedFromTheSea.

Four winners will be chosen over the course of the competition by Eunomia chairman Dominic Hogg. Two at the end of July and two at the end of August, each time he will select an entry with: the most unusual item found, then the most ‘creative reuse’ idea.

Hogg, who recently chaired a panel debate about marine plastics at this year’s UN Ocean Conference in New York, said: "We decided to launch this photo competition this summer to raise awareness of the huge problem of litter, and of plastic in the marine environment, which is already affecting wildlife and ourselves. We act as though we have dominion over most species on the planet, but we cannot even control ourselves not to trash – literally – the planet we share. We all need to wake up to this problem, and to make the link between stuff tossed away on the street, and the state of the world’s oceans. We hope entrants will have fun coming up with creative ideas for making use of the discarded items, and developing captions to go alongside their photos, all while doing something meaningful and contributing to maintaining the beauty of those parts of the world that we live in or visit on holiday."
