Waltham Forest residents who have joined the Waltham Forest Recycling Rewards scheme are able to access discounts and special offers provided by 65 local shops and restaurants when they show their Waltham Forest Recycling Rewards card or key fob.

Local cafes, hairdressers and dry cleaners offer Waltham Forest Recycling members special offers ranging from free items when residents make a purchase to percentage discounts. A full list of offers is available to residents once they activate their Recycling Rewards account, and offers can be found on the Local Rewards app which helps residents locate their nearest offers.

The Feel Good Café in North Chingford who recently signed up to the scheme offers residents a 10% discount between Monday and Thursday when they spend over £20. Idan Naor and Izabela Rudnicka, owners of the vegan café, feel it is important to incentivise recycling and other environmentally-friendly behaviours.

Rudnicka said: “At The Feel Good Cafe, we make sure all our packaging and disposable cutlery are recyclable, and even where possible, biodegradable and compostable as this means materials break down and go back into nature. We use environmentally-friendly cleaning products as we really hate to see chemicals polluting our planet. Naturally we do our bit to recycle in the shop and we’ve got a plan to make our own compost in the near future, as we’ve just got an allotment.”

Waltham Forest Recycling Rewards launched in May 2016, targeting purpose-built flats in Waltham Forest, encouraging residents to start recycling or to recycle more and to reduce waste. The scheme already has over 4,600 households signed up - almost a third of all the purpose-built flats in the borough.

Waltham Forest Council is working with the recycling engagement provider, Local Green Points, to deliver the scheme. Waltham Forest Recycling Rewards is funded through a grant which the council won from the Department for Communities and Local Government’s £11m recycling reward scheme fund. It is free for both businesses and residents who live in purpose-built flats to get involved in the scheme.
