Hi-Cone team with TerraCycle to launch plastic ring carrier recycling scheme

Ring carriers have long been a symbol of plastic pollution

Specialist manufacturer of beverage ring carriers Hi-Cone has become the first non-branded company to partner with TerraCycle to offer a recycling solution.

The initiative will encourage and educate consumers on hassle-free recycling streams by searching online for a nearest dedicated collection point or signing up as a private collector.

Community groups and individual consumers are encouraged to set up locations where the public can drop off ring carriers, ready to be sent to TerraCycle to be turned into park benches, outdoor furniture and composite lumber.

Despite 99% of UK local authorities collecting plastic bottles, very few collect ring carriers, according to the British Plastics Federation (BPF).

T.Kenneth Escoe, president of Hi-Cone, said: “It is vital that packaging producers take the lead in pushing sustainable programmes forward, and that is why we have stepped in at this stage of our own journey to champion this process with TerraCycle.

“We will be monitoring the progress of this initiative very closely as it rolls out in the UK, and will then assess the possibility of widening its scope further into Europe, the US and beyond.”

The new recycling scheme will begin in May.

Last year Carlsberg revelead plans to replace its plastic ring carriers with recyclable glue.
